What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a general medical term for sick or dysfunctional nerves. Nerves are like electrical wires within our body that carry information to and from our brains to sense our environment and move our extremities. Nerves can become sick and dysfunctional through mechanical forces (compression or stretch) or metabolic factors such as elevated blood sugar, abnormal thyroid function or a lack of nutrients (such as B vitamins). Toxins such as alcohol and some medications can also contribute to nerve damage. Often, multiple factors are involved in the development of neuropathy. For example, patients who smoke, have diabetes or lack adequate B vitamins are more likely to experience nerve dysfunction from mild compression or stretch as compared to healthier nerves.

Symptoms and Diagnosis
Most common symptoms of sick nerves are pain, numbness and weakness. The pain can be described as electrical, burning, pressure or pins & needles. When neuropathy is present in the legs and feet, patients can experience heaviness, cramping and loss of balance. When weakness is present, patients can drag their feet, frequently trip over things or drop items from their hands (when neuropathy is in the upper extremities).
A thorough history and a neurological physical exam is necessary to properly diagnose neuropathy. Often, advanced testing such as electrical nerve studies (EMG/NCS), ultrasound scan and MRI imaging are used to further identify the pathology. Lab testing may also be utilized to identify underlying conditions and nutritional deficiencies.

As a retired pain physician I am extremely picky on who I see and all I can say is Dr. Klisiewicz is Excellent! I sought him out for my pain problems and he has been spot on with his diagnosis and treatment. A very affable, kind and smart young man that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone in pain to see. He is surrounded by a competent staff.
Recently I had iliac artery surgery (PAD) for pain which I have had for several years. I feel better than I have felt in a long time and am able to walk without pain. He and his associates continue to work with me in physical therapy. I would highly recommend this group.
Dr. Sebastian was amazing! I would highly recommend him. I was experiencing a significant Fibromyalgia flare and lower back pain. He formulated a plan and along with his dietician and PT, I am recovering. I was losing hope. So grateful for his guidance on my health!
