What Causes Neck Pain?
A pain in the neck is common, but at times it can be a chronic and disabling condition. Neck pain can result from poor posture, injuries, stress and other underlying conditions. Often, a combination of all these factors along with low levels of fitness and a poor diet can all contribute to chronic neck pain. With injury and poor posture, the muscles and ligaments of the upper back and neck can get overstretched and weak. This places more stress on the discs and joints of the cervical spine causing disc degeneration and joint inflammation. If left untreated, cervical spine arthritis and stenosis can develop causing chronic pain and stiffness.
Injuries such as whiplash or falls can cause tears in the deep ligaments and muscles. This often causes spasms of the supporting muscles that contribute to pain and limited range of motion. Abnormal position of the cervical spine can also tighten and fatigue the supporting muscles. The nerves can get irritated or compressed by swollen joints and bulging discs contributing to pain, weakness and numbness down the shoulder and arm.

Symptoms and Diagnosis
Neck pain can present in the morning or can get worse as the day goes on. Certain activities such as computer work, sports or job duties can increase symptoms. The pain can radiate to the head, shoulder and arm. It is often accompanied by numbness, a sensation of pins and needles and weakness of the arm and hand.
A thorough history and physical evaluation will help to make a proper diagnosis. All the physical contributing factors such as muscle imbalance, ligament instability and motion restrictions need to be identified. Lifestyle factors such as work habits, diet and stress level need to be evaluated as well. Advanced imaging and nerve studies (EMGs) can also be utilized to help with the diagnosis.
